“We formed AOII to continue the friendships we made in college throughout our lifetimes.” – Stella George Stern Perry Our History: Alpha Omicron Pi was founded on January 2, 1897 at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City, New York. Alpha Omicron Pi is an international women’s fraternity, with chapters found in both Canada and the United States. Its international headquarters is located in Brentwood, Tennessee and it is a member of the National Panhellenic Conference. Our Founders: Alpha Omicron Pi was founded by four women; Jessie Wallace Hughan, Helen St. Clair Mullan, Elizabeth Heywood Wyman and Stella George Stern Perry. Our Mission Statement: Alpha Omicron Pi is an international women’s fraternity promoting friendship for a lifetime, inspiring academic excellence and lifelong learning, and developing leadership skills through service to the fraternity and community. Our Philanthropy: Alpha Omicron Pi has chosen Juvenile Arthritis and Arthritis Research and Education. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are donated each year. Our Color: Alpha Omicron Pi’s color is Cardinal (red). Our Flower: The Jacqueminot rose is the flower of Alpha Omicron Pi. Our Jewel: The ruby is the jewel chosen by Alpha Omicron Pi. Our Symbol: Alpha Omicron Pi believes in Greek traditions which is the reason the women’s fraternity does not have a coat of arms. Instead we us the Jacqueminot rose as the symbol. Other Collegiate Chapters: Since the beginning in 1897, Alpha Omicron Pi has over 132,000 initiates and maintains 183 chapters. AOII continues to grow today, installing three new chapters in the past year (The University of Arkansas, University of LaVerne, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology). Distinguished Alpha Omicron Pi’s: Margaret Bourke-White (Omicron Pi) - photographer and journalist, joined Alpha Omicron Pi while at the University of Michigan. Her works were donated to Alpha Omicron Pi upon her death in 1971, and today are displayed at the international headquarters. Courtney Kupets (Lambda Sigma) - Olympic and World Champion Gymnast at the University of Georgia.
